# CSV

CSV files are perfect when stakeholders export data from BI tools or spreadsheets. The plugin maps CSV columns to categories and series similarly to Google Sheets but without requiring live access.

### Preparing your CSV

* Use UTF-8 encoding whenever possible.
* Keep the header row (first line) for column names.
* Separate values with commas or semicolons; the plugin auto-detects both.
* Remove blank lines at the bottom to avoid empty categories.

### Import steps

1. Switch to **Table → CSV** in the Data tab.
2. Upload the CSV file.
3. Select which columns to import. First column = categories, others = series.

### Troubleshooting

| Issue                            | Diagnosis                                               | Fix                                              |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Column headers missing           | File lacks first-row names.                             | Add a header row and re-export.                  |
| Numbers parse as text | Check decimal separator; select `.` or `,` accordingly. | Adjust delimiter/decimal settings before import. |
| Chart shows extra blank category | Trailing newline in CSV. | Trim the file and re-upload. |

### Tips

* Store CSV snapshots in your project folder for version control.
* Combine manual tweaks with the Manual Table Editor after import if you need to adjust a few values by hand.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.chartplugin.com/how-to-add-your-own-data-to-your-graph/csv.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
